‘Extraordinary’ – history making run haul for Ashes hopeful
Only three players have ever made more 200 in a domestic one-day game and now one of them has done it for a second time in a stunning solo performance.
Test hopeful Travis Head has laid a serious early season Ashes marker with an amazing double-century for South Australia as he put his name in the history books in Adelaide.
The Redbacks captain, who was dropped from the Australian Test team last summer, began his campaign for a baggy green return in style last month, pounding 163 in his lone Sheffield Shield innings.
National coach, and selector, Justin Langer was quick to get in contact with Head after that monster effort.
But after a break of more than two weeks as Cricket Australia was forced to make changes to the domestic schedule because of ongoing border restrictions, Head made an even bigger statement.
He became the first Australian ever to score two one-day double-hundreds as he monstered the Queensland bowlers at Karen Rolton Oval, having made 202 in 2015 against Western Australia.
The 27-year-old blasted 28 fours and eight sixes in his innings of 230 off just 127 balls, an innings which now sits second behind only West Australian slugger D’Arcy Short’s epic 257 scored in 2018s
The left-hander was at his belligerent best as he raced to a 38-ball half century in the one-day game against before bringing up his ninth List A century with a six, off just 65 balls, with a six.
He was not even close to done however, and really got motoring after that bringing up his 150 off 91 balls, with a four.
A rain interruption was the only hope for the Queenslanders but when the skies cleared, Head continued on his merry way.
He reached 200 off just 114 balls with 25 fours and seven sixes in his amazing run haul.
Peace finally came for the Queensland bowlers when Head was dismissed by Michael Neser, shortly before SA’s innings ended on a mammoth 8-391.
Head’s score was the 13th hundred in just four domestic games this season and took his personal run haul to 412 in just three innings.
“This is short form batting at it’s very best,” Kerry O’Keefe said in commentary.
Head was nearly joined as a century-maker by opener Jake Weatherald, who was out for 97 as the Redbacks set about making an imposing total for the Queenslanders to chase.
South Australia is looking to secure its first win in any format since February, 2020, after going winless in last season’s one-day and Sheffield Shield competitions.
Paceman Brendan Doggett was picked for his debut for SA against his former state Queensland as the teams clashed ahead of a Sheffield Shield showdown this weekend.
