Too much disk space usage can not only affect the user browsing experience but can also slow down the whole system. To improve performance and reduce disk footprint, the browser will automatically compress disk caches in Edge 102 and above.

The tech giant has also mentioned that Edge will automatically compress disk caches on eligible systems. However, the browser will check the system’s eligibility to ensure that compression won’t result in poor performance. This built-in browser is available on Windows 10 and 11 and is powered by Chromium to ensure its compatibility with the vast majority of the web.

As per the blog post,, “When a browser uses too many resources, it not only impacts the browsing experience but can also slow down the entire system.” Microsoft has also explained that “an unbounded cache can lead to the system running out of disk space.”
The blog further mentions, “However, when it comes to performance optimisations, we often need to balance optimising for the entire system, since optimising for one resource can often come at the cost of increasing the use of another resource.”
Microsoft has also noted that contents within caches are usually highly compressible and doing it increases the chances of the disk resource becoming available when requested.
