Exclusive! Sonu Walia: I got closer to my husband because of Lata Mangeshkar – Times of India

Well, sometimes you say certain things to people and it changes their life. Lata Mangeshkar once told Sonu Walia’s husband Pratap Singh after he had sung a song which she’d heard, “You are a genius”. Consequence? Sonu Walia (who’s acted in ‘Khoon Bhari Maang’ and many other movies) got mighty impressed with Mr Pratap with whom she later tied the knot.

“We were still dating then. When Lata ji told him that, I thought ‘Wow, Lata ji has said it. That’s the ultimate compliment. Slowly, I got closer to him.” Pratap Singh is no more – he passed away in 2009- but Sonu and he led a very happy marital life till then; touch wood.

Sonu is not yet ready to accept that Lata ji is no longer with us. “She can’t go, she won’t,” she says assertively. “I met her many times. Every time she came across as an affectionate, loving and caring person. She had the capacity to make you feel that you were a part of her.”

Added Sonu, “I often told her that it is my dream that I should sing like you but it won’t happen at least in this lifetime.”

“Lata ji is synonymous with every moment of childhood. She was in those wonderful moments enthralling me and millions. She may be singing with the angels now. She just cannot go. That’s her legacy,” Sonu signed off.
