ET Startup Awards 2022: Jury looks for profit-focused contenders

Growth at all costs is very 2020 and the startup world has been forced to move on, say jury members. What matters today is good unit economics, sustainability and a path to profitability. And solving for complex socio-economic challenges across multiple sectors.

Sanjeev Bikhchandani, cofounder, Info Edge

“The startup funding environment has changed in the last year… While investors do have money they are being a lot more discerning than before. They are also taking their time before investing. And they are applying the filters of good unit economics, sustainability and path to profit a lot more rigorously than a year before. In such an environment I would expect startups to align to these three criteria if they are not already profitable. I would look at things like natural traction and scalability, path to profitability and financial stability, as well as the ability to raise a follow-on funding round, if needed. For nominees, it is also important they show innovation while they have clarity of thought and are focussed on it.”
