England vs Australia, Ashes 2023, 2nd Test: I’d do anything for this team, says Nathan Lyon after one-legged cameo | Cricket News – Times of India
The Australian off-spinner’s participation in the Ashes series seemed improbable after he suffered a severe calf injury while fielding on Thursday. However, he astounded almost everyone present at the ground when he limped out to bat at the number 11 position, aiming to bolster his team’s lead over England.
What unfolded was a truly peculiar innings that will be remembered for years to come at the historic venue. Batting alongside fast bowler Mitchell Starc, Lyon, who was playing in his 100th consecutive Test match, appeared vulnerable as he contended with the hostile bowling.Despite his one-legged stance, Lyon showcased his refined shot-making skills, but due to his inability to run between the wickets, he and Starc were left with the sole option of aiming for boundaries to increase the score.
At one juncture, a remarkable piece of fielding by England substitute Rehan Ahmed prevented Starc from hitting a six, and amidst the ensuing confusion, Lyon somehow managed to hop between the wickets to complete a single before collapsing in exhaustion.
In the end, Lyon faced 13 deliveries, including a boundary, and contributed to a 15-run partnership that featured a booming six by Starc. This partnership enabled Australia to set England a formidable target of 371 for victory, surpassing the 359-run target that Ben Stokes-inspired England famously chased down in 2019 at Headingley.
Lyon expressed no hesitation in making personal sacrifices for the benefit of the team.
“I wanted to bat. It was my call,” Lyon said. “I knew the risks but I’d do anything for this team and you never know how big a 15-run partnership can be in an Ashes series.
“I’m proud of myself for going out there and doing that. If it was tomorrow I’d do it again, and again and again and again.”
Lyon, 35, said he had exchanged a few words with England bowler James Anderson before shuffling out to the square.
“He asked me am I stupid,” Lyon said. “And I said yes.”
Lyon’s exploits certainly inspired Starc and captain Pat Cummings who between them reduced England to 45 for 4 before the hosts closed on 114 for 4, needing 257 runs for victory on day five.
