  • Despite training with the senior squad, Levi Colwill is expected to travel to Euros

Lee Carsley admitted relief that Cole Palmer arrived at England’s Under-21 camp ready for the European Championship after Manchester City’s three-day party.

City’s Treble winners fully enjoyed their historic feat, with the drink finally stopping on Monday night.

Palmer played a part in England training on Tuesday before undoing a full session on Wednesday and is part of a stellar squad headed to the tournament in Romania and Georgia, with their campaign kicking off next Thursday.

‘I wasn’t sure what to expect,’ Carsley said. ‘Cole is quite sensible. You have seen the pictures on the telly and until he actually walks through the door… I was relieved when I actually saw him.

‘He will be doing a lot of sleeping over the next few days, but it is brilliant that he had such a good experience. He looked a bit tired but that is to be expected.

‘He is very motivated to do well this tournament, we have to be realistic as well with the demand that we put on him because he is not used to playing 90 minutes all the time.’ Palmer’s team-mate, 18-year-old Rico Lewis, has been omitted from the 23-man travelling party. Lewis was informed by Carsley earlier in the week and is now on a standby list.

Levi Colwill has been training with the seniors but Carsley expects the defender to remain with the Under 21s for the Euros.

‘We took Rico’s age into consideration, he will have a full campaign next year,’ Carsley added. ‘He has played a part in City’s success.

‘With [Chelsea’s] Lewis Hall as well, we have to take into consideration the amount of stress and pressure they’ve had to deal with. For their age it is important he regroups and gets his energy back for next season.’
