England Under 21 are crowned European champions without conceding a goal

England Under 21s have been crowned European champions after not conceding a single goal throughout the tournament. 

The young Three Lions won their first trophy in 39 years with a 1-0 win over Spain in the final thanks to Curtis Jones’ goal. 

England went close to conceding their first goal of the tournament when Spain were awarded a penalty in the dying moments of the game. 

But goalkeeper James Trafford was the hero as he produced an incredible late double save, including one from 12 yards out. 

It ensured Lee Crasley’s sixth clean sheet of the tournament having not let in a goal in their previous five games in the tournament.

James Trafford produced an incredible late double save as England won the Under-21 Euros

The final, which took place in Georgia, was a chaotic encounter, with Morgan Gibbs-White, who had been substituted, being sent off late on, while Spain’s Antonio Blanco was also dismissed. England assistant coach Ashley Cole was sent off in the first half. 

Abel Ruiz stepped up to take the penalty for Spain in the ninth minute of second half stoppage time but Trafford managed to save it and then responded by keeping out the rebound. 

Lee Carsley’s side have shown excellent resilience during the tournament. They progressed through the group stages with 2-0 victories over Czechia, Israel and Germany.

That was followed by a 1-0 success against Portugal and a 3-0 triumph over Israel before the 1-0 win against Spain in the final.
