England star Harry Brook blasts first hundred of this year’s IPL off just 55 balls, as the 24-year-old puts his poor start at Sunrisers Hyderabad behind him to notch a second Twenty20 ton

  • Harry Brook has scored a 55-ball hundred for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL
  • It came after a tough start that saw him fail to pass 13 in his first three innings
  • The knock will be a welcome return to form for the £1.35 million signing

Harry Brook struck the first hundred of this year’s Indian Premier League yesterday to begin paying back his seven-figure auction fee.

The 24-year-old England star blasted Kolkata Knight Riders’ attack for an unbeaten 100 off 55 balls at Eden Gardens, to put a sticky start to his Sunrisers Hyderabad career well and truly behind him.

Brook, who has been used as an opener by the Sunrisers despite batting lower down for both Yorkshire and England, made scores of 13, 3 and 13 in his first three appearances.

But the Yorkshireman set the tone in his fourth by racing to 31 off just 11 balls, and made the most of an escape on 45 when Suyash Sharma floored a return chance, to register the second Twenty20 hundred of his career in the final over of Hyderabad’s imposing 228 for four.

There was even an added bonus for Brook – who says one of his reasons for liking T20 is because it means you have to field for as long – when coach Brian Lara subbed him out of the contest at the halfway stage.

Having done the damage with the bat, the £1.35million signing put his feet up in the dug-out as India international all-rounder Washington Sundar entered the action as an impact player.

Brook’s effort meant that seven of the most recent 14 IPL hundreds have been scored by England players: Jos Buttler has struck five of them, with Ben Stokes contributing the other.

Kevin Pietersen and Jonny Bairstow are the only other two England centurions at Twenty20’s leading franchise competition.
