England great lashes out over Ashes quarantine fiasco

An English cricketing legend has made a shock claim in regards to the impending quarantine dilemma facing England for the upcoming Ashes series.

The England cricket team are just over a month away from arriving in Australia ahead of the upcoming Ashes series, but one former English great has made a wild claim about the side’s impending quarantine situation.

As it stands, the partners and family members of the touring England players will not be permitted entry into Australia, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison recently declaring he wouldn’t alter the current rules.

It could mean England’s stars will be away from their family and loved ones for a number of months should Mr Morrison stick with his plan.

But Kevin Pietersen, who made over 100 test appearances from England, boldly declared he wouldn’t even bother travelling for the Ashes this year, and slammed the current quarantine rules in Australia.

The 41-year-old took to social media to share his feelings, tweeting: “There is NO WAY I would go to The Ashes this winter. ZERO chance! Unless, the ridiculous quarantine rules were squashed and my family could travel with zero restrictions. Players are now done with bubbles! DONE!!!!!!!”

There was mixed reaction to Pietersen’s tweet, with many users divided on his stance.

One user backed the former English Test captain and referenced the fact the players’ family members would be fully vaccinated against Covid, tweeting: “Every single one of them are double vaccinated their (sic) is barely any threat to health. Forcing quarantine on double vaccinated, healthy people is illogical. Either Australia catches up with the rest of the World or no Ashes.”

On the other side of the debate, another user believed Pietersen was in the wrong when it came to the rules in regards to partners or family members entering Australia, and wrote: “But Covid is not done. It is still spreading and precautions still need to be taken. The vaccine does not mean you can’t get Covid and spread it. Every country has a right to protect its citizens in any way they choose.”

Pietersen’s outburst comes after Morrison declared he wouldn’t do any “special deals” to allow the families of travelling English crickets entry into Australia for the Ashes.

“I would love to see the Ashes go ahead, as I shared with Boris last night,” Mr Morrison told reporters in Washington last Thursday.

“But there’s no special deals there, because what we’re looking to have is vaccinated people being able to travel.

“I don’t see a great deal of difference in skilled workers or students who will be able to come to Australia when you reach those vaccination rates.

“Those who are coming for that purpose when it comes to their profession, which is playing cricket, I don’t see the difference between that and someone who’s coming as a skilled, qualified engineer or someone who’s coming to be ready for study.”

It isn’t the first time Pietersen has been outspoken regarding Australia’s handling of the pandemic, as he targeted Victorian Premier Dan Andrews in August.

“Who is this absolute clown?” the former England test captain wrote on Twitter.

Pietersen also blasted Australia’s “horror” vaccine rollout, taking a swipe at Morrison.

“I feel so sorry for all of my buddies in Australia. And all Australia!” Pietersen tweeted in August.

“Locking away a nation that wears flip-flops and loves the outdoors, is just WRONG! How’s their PM going? Horror vaccine roll out!”
