Elon Musk drafts ex-Twitter desi Sriram Krishnan to ring in changes – Times of India
WASHINGTON: Twitter‘s new boss Elon Musk has drafted Chennai-born Indian-American engineer Sriram Krishnan to a core team to effect changes to the social media platform amid disquiet in many quarters about the fallout from the world’s richest man’s free speech absolutism.
Sriram Krishnan, a former Twitter employee who began his career with Microsoft and is currently a partner at the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (also known by its acronym a16z) confirmed the development himself, tweeting, “Now that the word is out: I’m helping out @elonmusk with Twitter temporarily with some other great people.”
“I ( and a16z) believe this is a hugely important company and can have great impact on the world and Elon is the person to make it happen,” he added, clarifying, amid speculation that he is in line to be the next CEO, that he is “still very much in my day job at @a16zcrypto. If you’re a crypto founder, you know how to find me!”
Krishnan, a graduate of SRM Engineering College, Anna University (2001-2005), was earlier with Twitter in 2017-2017, leading core consumer product teams that his linked-in profile says drove Twitter user growth more than 20% year on year. He also headed core product teams including home timeline, onboarding/new user experience, search, discovery, etc. and launched several products including a redesigned events experience. He earlier had leadership roles running product and engineering at Meta (Facebook) and Snap.
Krishnan and his wife Aarthi Ramamuthy, who has worked in Microsoft, Netflix, and Facebook, are regarded as a Silicon Valley power couple. They host a podcast called the GoodTime Show that has featured among others Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
Even before he went public with his role in Twitter’s revamping, Krishnan had tweeted that he’s “Really excited for the future of Twitter. This platform has given me and countless others so much.” But there was also some wariness from some tweeps (or “twits” in Musk-ese) leery of Krishnan crypto-evangelism considering it is part of his portfolio at Andreesen Horowitz.
“Please keep a16z’s pump and dump scamcoins off of Twitter. The jpeg receipt profile pictures are bad enough as it is…” read one tweet, referring to Twitter’s association with the crypto world through a hexagonal Non-Fungible Token linked profile picture. Twitter users in US and some other countries with a blue verification tick who link their crypto wallets to their account can access the NFT feature — a paid subscription service that gives its users access to premium services.
Many users are unhappy about Musk-led Twitter monetizing the social media platform through such “premium services” including a potential $ 19.99 charges for the blue tick verification. Over the weekend, the tech world was atwitter with reports — which Twitter did not confirm — that it plans to change Twitter Blue into a $19.99 subscription and that staff had been told they will be fired if they don’t build it by Nov. 7.
Meanwhile, Twitter’s new owner Elon Musk (himself) triggered outrage in liberal and Democratic circles in the US by tweeting, — and later deleting — a post suggesting that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi could have been attacked by a gay lover.
