Elles x Paris Photo: a circuit dedicated to women photographers

Paris Photo continues its commitment to women in photography with Elles x Paris Photo, a program initiated in 2018 in partnership with the French Ministry of Culture and supported by Women In Motion, a Kering program that shines a light on the talent of women artists and their contribution to the history of photography.

Italian writer and curator Federica Chiocchetti has been appointed curator of the 2022 edition of this circuit dedicated to women photographers. Through her platform Photocaptionist she collaborates with international museums (Jeu de Paume, V&A, Kunsthalle Budapest), private collections (David Solo, Archive of Modern Conflict) festivals and fairs (Jaipur Photo, T3 Tokyo Photo Festival, Paris Photo), publishers (Spector Books, Aperture, Foam), bookstores (La Fabrica, Shakespeare and Company) and universities (University of Oxford, ECAL), among others. She holds a PhD in ‘Photo-Texts’, from London’s University of Westminster, which she is transforming into a touring exhibition, book and educational project, the Word and Image Workshop. Her research on women in photography was presented in multiple forms by L’Uomo Vogue, Fotomuseum Winterthur, 10×10 Photobooks, London Art Fair and The Photographers’ Gallery.

“It is an honor to be named curator for the 2022 edition of Elles x Paris Photo and carry on the admirable work of my predecessors.” Chiocchetti says. “The number of incredibly talented women photo-artists whose work or estate is not yet represented by galleries is still surprisingly high, which makes this initiative a fundamental one, but also very challenging for myself personally as I endeavor to bring to the forefront artists who have yet to be spotlighted at the fair. I look forward to this endeavor. Change is possible if together we convince the industry and the market that it is – by embracing it. I hope that Elles x Paris Photo and the advances it makes each year continue to encourage new and established galleries from all over the world to be daring in their propositions and present more and more female artists at Paris Photo and in their spaces in general. Galleries have until April 15, 2022 to apply to the fair, hopefully with as many female artists as possible.”
