Elle Fanning Talks Paco Rabanne, Fame, and Aesthetic Duality
Elle Fanning is not just one thing—especially in regard to style. “I have a real duality in myself—I’m very feminine, but also, at the same time, I like things that are a bit edgy and hard too,” she says. The actor has proven this point time and time again, allowing both the hyper-feminine, saccharine, rococo influences (The Great, The Beguiled) and the barbed punctuations (Teen Spirit, The Neon Demon) associated with her most iconic roles to seep into her approach to real-life fashion and beauty. Between this contrast and her familiarity with the public eye—in which she has lived since she was two years old—it’s only natural that Paco Rabanne would turn to the actor to serve as the face of its latest fragrance, Fame.
“Fame can be really fun at times, you know, when you’re on the red carpet, and it’s extremely glamorous and really exciting,” says Fanning. “I think that this bottle and this whole idea exudes that glamour in a beautiful way.” The perfume is whimsically housed in a gilded robot wearing an iconic design of Rabanne himself, who sadly died today at 88. It’s the iconic chainmail midi dress, which is a fitting choice considering that the warm scent embodies the storied fashion house’s Parisian feels—along with the sort of fun-loving spirit associated with the modern era of femininity. Fanning adds that the bottle’s blend—a medley of clean jasmine, mango, and intoxicating incense—is exactly what she looks for in a perfume. “It’s floral, it’s refreshing, it’s a little sweet, which I do really love,” she says.
