Ella Emhoff Really, Really Likes to Knit
On Friday night, Ella Emhoff walked the Collina Strada show in a quilted jacket and printed slip dress. Afterwards she ran to Spring Studios to finish putting together the set of her pop-up, which opened the following day and included mannequins dressed in her hand-knitted pieces relaxing on “rolling hills” made of AstroTurf. Colorful knitted bows stood in the place of flowers.
“I’ve been working on it straight for the past month,” Emhoff said later that evening, during the cocktail party portion of the day-long event. She explained that she’d been wanting to figure out a way to show her work during Fashion Week. “I started as a fine artist, and now I’m in fashion and having a runway show doesn’t make sense for me,” she said. “I need it to be an immersive experience. I have a very clear vision of where and how my knits exist, and I feel like this is the only way to translate that.”
Emhoff wore a cream knitted vest (made by her) that featured a few of her favorite things: her initials, Lightning McQueen, Pluto in a pumpkin, a variety of the pins she collects, and a white silk jacquard floral skirt by the New York label Commission. She fitted right in with her mannequin tableau. Her work is characterized by bold colors, uneven stripes, and a penchant for intricate intarsia illustrations of things both familiar (a tomato, a birthday cake) and the whimsical (a self portrait with a bunny mask). Some of the pieces on display included long sleeve knitted maxi dresses, chunky balaclavas, and a vest embellished with tons of little knitted bows. At the pop-up guests could place special orders, or take home a few ready-made pieces.
