Eight-foot-tall golden statue atop New York City courthouse grabs limelight. This is what happened
Some Twitter users have been condemning the new eight-foot-tall golden statue.
The statue, which has been created by Pakistani American artist Shahzia Sikander, stands on the roof of the state courthouse in Flatiron district, New York. It is located next to statues of lawmakers, Confucius, Moses and Zoroaster.
Created to pay homage to Ruth Bader Ginsberg and her fight for abortion, the ‘NOW’ statute has been raised. It has curling braids and tentacle-like arms rising from a lotus flower.
The statue also has a lace collar, which is the signature of the late Supreme Court Justice. It is part of an urgent and necessary cultural reckoning underway as New York looks to reconsider traditional representations of power in public spaces and recasts civic structures to reflect the 21st-century social mores in a better way, Sikander said.
This is the first female statue to become a part of the plinth of a courthouse. The statue is called “NOW” as it is needed in a moment when reproductive rights of women are under siege, the artist said as per media reports.
Some social media users are not happy with the installation of the statue. People have raised issues with its design and message.
In June, the sculpture will be removed as it will head to Houston, Texas.
