Ecommerce employees are at higher risk for developing poor mental health, according to a workplace survey conducted by Mpower, a mental health initiative by the Aditya Birla Education Trust.

Sector wise, the survey found that ecommerce bears the maximum brunt of mental health risk at 64%, followed by FMCG at 56%, automobile & healthcare at 55%, hospitality at 53%, BPO at 47%, banking at 41%, education at 39%, IT at 38%, and durables at 31%.

The ecommerce sector in recent times has been rocked by lay-offs, poor work-life balance, and high-pressure work environments.

The survey titled ‘Mental Health and Wellness Quotient @Workplace 2023’, analysed responses from a sample of 3,000 corporate employees including managerial to CEO levels, across eight top metro cities of India.

Nearly 48% of corporate employees surveyed are struggling with mental health issues with female corporate employees being more prone to high mental health risk at 56% compared to men at 41%.

About 29% of employees surveyed said concerns affecting the mental well-being are job and work-life balance, 24% said family and relationships, 22% about finances and another 22% on health and wellness.

Employees in senior positions such as senior associate vice president or vice president exhibited elevated levels of mental health distress with 70% and 61%, respectively, falling in the ‘At Risk’ category.The age group between 35 to 45 years, known for their productivity, is at a higher risk of suffering from these issues that can have a significant impact on employee productivity. Approximately 50% of these employees strongly agree that stress impacts their work productivity.

The survey found 48% of corporate employees are ‘at risk’ of poor mental health, while female employees being more susceptible with 56% of them prone to mental health risks.

“Across the ten sectors, employees from the automobile industry were found to have significantly higher concerns around attrition rates, stress impacting productivity, political environment and fear of losing their jobs,” the survey report said.

“Work-related concerns were found to be significantly higher among employees in hospitality and healthcare industries with multiple factors contributing to stress levels. Interestingly, the E-commerce industry had a significantly higher rating on finding their work mentally demanding, as compared to other concerns,” it added.

Among cities, the survey found that lack of motivation was the top most factor in Mumbai (63%) and Delhi (51%), while lack of confidence in Kolkata (60%) was the main factor negatively impacting professional growth, with other cities following a similar trend.
