Eckhaus Latta Releases the Most Adorable Baby Collection
Latta approaches design for children the same way she would for adults. “We wanted to take out the preciousness that came with the ready-to-wear offering, and offers garments that kids could play in.” Everything is 100 percent cotton and comfy.
Latta recognizes that the Eckhaus Latta Bambino line isn’t inexpensive—the prices range from $95-$215–but she wants her clothes to be re-worn and doesn’t want the pieces to be tossed if there is a stain or damage. She also notes that there’s a booming second-hand marketplace for kid’s clothing. “People can hold onto things for another generation rather than treating them like a onesie that goes into the trash after getting a stain,” she says.
Like Eckhaus Latta’s ready-to-wear, the clothes aren’t gendered. Unlike their ready-to-wear, the team specifically made pieces a bit bigger and with stretch, something based on Latta’s own experience when shopping for her child. “I would say ours run a little big because it is devastating to get something [that is too small],” says Latta. “I have this [Jean Paul] Gaultier onesie of Joy’s that is trompe l’oeil overalls, and he only got to wear it three times because he just grew out of it.” That was a recurring challenge with this new collection: growing babies. “Between sample sets, [Joy] would change size!” Talk about growing up before your very eyes.
