EAM S Jaishankar to set off four-day visit to Tanzania today
The visit aims to facilitate high-level discussions and co-chair the 10th Joint Commission Meeting with his Tanzanian counterpart.
Jaishankar will meet with key leaders of the East African nation and participate in a reception aboard the Indian Naval Ship Trishul. Additionally, he will address the Indian diaspora and inaugurate the bust of Swami Vivekananda during his visit.
“EAM will thereafter visit the Dar-es-Salaam city of Tanzania from 07-08 July 2023, where he will co-chair the 10th India-Tanzania Joint Commission Meeting with his counterpart and call on the country’s top leadership, including several Cabinet rank Ministers,” the official release said.
Jaishankar will begin by visiting Zanzibar from July 5 to 6. During this time, he will inspect a water supply project that has been funded by the Government of India through a line of credit. He will also hold meetings with prominent leaders in Zanzibar and attend a reception on board the Indian Naval Ship Trishul, which is currently visiting Tanzania.
“During the visit, he will meet with the members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group for India and inaugurate an India-Tanzania business meeting. EAM will also be addressing the Indian diaspora and inaugurating the bust of Swami Vivekananda in Dar es Salaam,” the release added.
To further enhance educational cooperation, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is preparing to establish its inaugural overseas campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania, as reported by The Citizen.
The campus, named IIT Madras at Zanzibar, is set to commence operations in October 2023 and will initially admit 50 undergraduate students and 20 master’s students. Zanzibar will become one of three international campuses for IIT, alongside Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur.
Earlier this year, India and Tanzania held the second edition of the Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting in Arusha, Tanzania, on June 28 and 29. During the meeting, the two countries engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
The Ministry of Defence issued a statement highlighting the focus on enhancing cooperation in this strategic maritime area.
