During NYFW, The Mulberry Opened its Doors With an A-List After-Party
With a background in music and entertainment, Meynell is the vice president of Creative for TSX Entertainment by day and one of The Mulberry founders by night. He’s joined by Leo Jacob, the current director of marketing for The Bowery Hotel and The Hotel Chelsea, whose passion for portrait photography can be explored in Jacob’s book titled “New York is Dead? Long Live New York.”
The third founding partner, Justin Sievers, is the brains behind the belly of The Mulberry, the bar. As a hospitality industry veteran with Locanda Verde and Bar Primi on his resume, Sievers is serving beautifully presented cocktails that aren’t overly complicated. “Some are serious classics, yet there are others that are just fun and help represent the bar’s identity, such as Black Velvet.” Meynell smiled. “It’s a classic cocktail that captures the spirit of the bar by combining the elegance of Champagne with the comfort of Guinness.”
The dynamic trio reimagined a blank canvas basement lot with a liquor license from 1895 into a swanky modern-day speakeasy outfitted in just the right amount of bells and whistles.“When it came to the design, knew we wanted an elevated space but something that also touched on a by-gone-era design that is true to New York City,” Meynell explained.
Not masculine or feminine, not vintage nor modern, not bougie nor divey, The Mulberry feels both familiar yet never seen before. Speaking of one-of-a-kind decor, Swedish artist Emelie Törling is responsible for the captivating abstract wall paintings that wrap around the dance floor. And, yes, the line for the bathrooms is worth the wait when the washrooms are a marbled, dream-like experience of their own.
On opening night, as The Muses and special guest deejay Alison Mosshart from The Kills were on the deejay decks, Robbie and her gaggle of girls were caught dancing the night away to ABBA’s greatest hits. Nearby, Stan and Wallis cozied up in a corner booth under the disco ball. As the clock edged past midnight, two truths became clear in my mind. The night was definitely still young, and The Mulberry is destined to be the effortlessly cool place to see and be seen–that is, if you can get past the door.
