Dr. Jill Biden Wears a Ralph Lauren Suit to the Coronation of King Charles
First Lady Dr. Jill Biden is representing America—and its fashion.
Today, at the coronation of King Charles III, the first lady wore a cornflower blue suit set by Ralph Lauren while attending the historic service at Westminster Abbey. Featuring a crossover neckline top over a pencil skirt, the outfit fits the stated dress code for the event of “morning dress, lounge suit, or national dress.” She paired it with matching suede gloves as well as a small fascinator. Next to her? Her granddaughter, Finnegan Biden, wore a pastel yellow gown by Markarian.
It’s an important engagement for Biden, who was sent to London on behalf of her husband, President Joe Biden. No U.S. president has ever attended a coronation, however an official American representative is usually sent in a gesture of goodwill between the two allies. For the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in 1953, it was special ambassador George Marshall.
Biden’s presence 70 years later marks the first time a First Lady has ever attended the formal crowning of the head of state. “The first lady is honored to represent the United States for this historic moment and celebrate the special relationship between the United States and the U.K.,” said Vanessa Valdivia, her press secretary, in a statement. “Her attendance reinforces the strong and enduring ties with one of our closest allies.”
