Feminine hygiene plays a vital role in keeping our vaginas healthy and infection-free. Unfortunately, many women avoid talking about this and do not know the appropriate ways to maintain hygiene down there due to the cultural stigma associated with female genitals. As a result, women often end up with an infection in their vagina caused by yeast or bacteria overgrowth. Vaginal infections can lead to rashes, itchiness, a foul odour and even a painful burning sensation in some cases. Given the severity of the issue, it is important to prioritize feminine hygiene and here are some tips to ensure your intimate zones stay squeaky clean.

Daily cleansing with a gentle vaginal wash

Even though our vaginas are self-cleaning, we must focus on keeping the surrounding area (vulva) clean. Stay away from sulphate-based soaps and washes with strong perfume since they can do more harm than good, resulting in skin irritation or dryness. Experts recommend using a mild, chemical-free intimate wash that will not disrupt the natural pH balance of the vagina while gently removing impurities.

When it comes to menstrual hygiene, make sure to replace your sanitary napkin/tampon every few hours and wash the vulva with a gentle cleanser every time you visit the washroom.

Choose breathable undergarments

Tight-fitted undergarments made from synthetic fibres trap in heat and moisture, which can promote bacterial growth and puts you at a higher risk of contracting an infection. Instead, opt for cotton underwear that will help absorb extra moisture and keep your intimate region dry. It’s also advisable to change your underwear after sweaty workout sessions or heavy physical activities.

Add leafy vegetables to your diet

Adding green, leafy vegetables to your daily diet will do wonders for your vaginal health. Along with your protein intake, your diet should include fresh vegetables, fruits and probiotics like homemade curd and yoghurt to control the growth of infection-causing microorganisms in the vaginal area. Our vagina deserves the same care we show for the rest of our body parts. Following a proper hygiene routine is crucial, but don’t fall for products that are laden with harmful substances like sulphates, perfume and artificial preservatives. As with intimate health and hygiene, taking a less-is-more route is the right way to go about it.
