Donald Newhouse Is Honored at the 2022 Hope Rising Benefit

To all the guests at last night’s benefit supporting research on and awareness of Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD), “Hope Rising” was much more than just the name of the party. It was also a poignant adage that many of the attendees of the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration’s 2022 Hope Rising Benefit could identify with—in the audience were doctors and the loved ones of individuals who have had first-hand experience with FTD.

Though FTD is often little understood and not easily diagnosed, it’s the most common form of dementia for people under the age of 60. For the night’s honoree, Donald Newhouse, the cause was incredibly close to his heart; the disease tragically took his late brother and wife. For AFTD board member Beth Walter, it was her husband who received a diagnosis; and New York State Senator Michelle Hinchey videoed in to speak of her role as caretaker for a family member suffering from the disease.

But for all of those who shared their stories, it was clear there was as much hope as there was heartbreak. “Grief is one constant at every phase,” said Walter to the audience at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in Midtown Manhattan, “but hope is the good thing our journeys will eventually come to have in common.”

The gala event raised $2,150,000, all of which will go directly to supporting AFTD’s mission, as costs associated with the benefit were covered by event leadership.

After dinner, guests were treated to a performance by Tony Award-winner Jessie Mueller, who debuted a number from the Night at the Museum musical coming soon to Broadway. Her finale was performed alongside Newhouse. In homage to his late wife, Susan, Mueller sang “If You Knew Susie,” which left the entire 380-person audience with tears in their eyes and even fuller hearts.
