Dolphins HC Brian Flores: Tua Tagovailoa is starting QB for rest of season
One gets the impression that Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores would forever put rumors linking his team with Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson to bed if given the chance.
Flores first said in August that Tua Tagovailoa is Miami’s QB1, and he reiterated that stance earlier this week ahead of this coming Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline. Tagovailoa commented on Wednesday he doesn’t “feel wanted” amid the Watson links, and Flores told reporters Friday that Tagovailoa is on track to remain atop his depth chart through the completion of the season “barring injury.”
“I think I’ve said this multiple times, ‘Tua is our quarterback,'” Flores said ahead of Sunday’s game at the 4-2 Buffalo Bills, per Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN. “I don’t get into rumors, I don’t get into speculation — Tua is our quarterback. … I’m focused on our team; I’m focused on our quarterback, and that’s Tua.”
Watson is remaining a paid unused asset each week following his offseason request to be traded from the Texans, but the fact that he’s still facing 22 lawsuits alleging acts of sexual assault and misconduct and 10 criminal complaints is reportedly keeping the Dolphins and any other would-be buyer from going all-in on acquiring him this fall. It’s widely believed his legal issues won’t be settled before the trade deadline, and it’s still unclear if he will eventually be suspended or made ineligible to play via the commissioner’s exempt list.
