Dodgers ace Walker Buehler announces he has had second Tommy John surgery
The worst-case scenario has come to pass for Los Angeles Dodger ace Walker Buehler.
The Dodgers shut down Buehler for the season on Aug. 15 and said he would undergo elbow surgery, but on Tuesday Buehler confirmed in an Instagram post that he had had the Tommy John procedure. Recovery from the injury will almost certainly keep Buehler out of the lineup until 2024.

“It’s certainly a blow,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said on Aug. 15. “We’re better with Walker on our ballclub, but there’s nothing we can do about it. I still believe we have enough guys to prevent runs to get through October, but yeah, we wanted him to be a part of this.”
The 28-year-old also had the procedure in 2015. He last pitched on June 10 and was lifted from that start with elbow discomfort. He had surgery in June to remove bone spurs but was not able to return to the lineup after that procedure. Buehler, a two-time all-star, was 6-3 with a 4.02 ERA in 12 appearances this season.
The Dodgers are once again a World Series contender, with an MLB-best 84 wins entering play Tuesday and 17.5 game lead over the San Diego Padres in the NL West.
