Dior Bets Big on a Birkenstock Collab For Everyone
Welcome to the world of chic gardening shoes, courtesy of Dior. In a power move that demonstrates creative director Kim Jones’s ability to tap into the zeitgeist and make it luxury, the French maison has collaborated with Birkenstock.
These are not your average Arizonas. Jones chose to reimagine the Tokio mules, first released by Birkenstock in 1987, and the Milano sandals, a mid-’60s classic, as a tribute to Monsieur Dior’s passion for horticulture. Realized in butter-soft Dior-grey felt and suede, the slip-ons come with rubber details and industrial buckles emulating the accents of the Dior Saddle bag.
Not all Diorified Birkenstocks are created equal. While all the shoes come with snazzy soles combining the Dior Oblique motif with Birkenstock’s Bone print, one ornate pair of Tokios comes embroidered with delicate couture-level flowers. Paired with the autumn/winter 2022 collection, a melange of exceptional muted tailoring with a twist, those soft Birks surely inspired everyone watching the show to up their house slipper game.
Jones has his pick of every exceptional talent to collaborate with, but the designer has an eye for what sells. And these babies will be a surefire winner when the unisex edit drops in June.
