Did you know singer-composer Bappi Lahiri was also an author? – Times of India

Veteran singer-composer Bappi Lahiri died this morning due to obstructive sleep apnea at CritiCare Hospital, Mumbai. He was 69. The news of his death has left his fans in shock, especially since he passed away just 10 days after the demise of India’s nightingale Lata Mangeshkar.

Sharing more details about Lahiri’s death, Dr Deepak Namjoshi, Director- CritiCare Hospital, told PTI, “Lahiri had been admitted to the hospital for a month due to lung infection which was caused by Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). We had discharged him on Monday and he was absolutely fine. All his vitals were normal. But his health deteriorated on Tuesday and his family called in. He was brought to the hospital. He had multiple health issues. He died due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) shortly before midnight.”

Alokesh Lahiri aka Bappi Lahiri was born in a family of musicians on November 27, 1952 in West Bengal. His parents, Aparesh and Bansuri Lahiri, were Bengali singers. And he was also related to legendary singer Kishore Kumar, who was his maternal uncle. Bappi Lahiri is known for pioneering synthesised disco music in Indian cinema from the 1970s to 1990s. Some of his famous songs include ‘I am a disco dancer’, ‘Pag ghunghroo’, ‘Jimmy Jimmy’, ‘Tamma Tamma Loge’, ‘Yaar bina chain kahan re’, and more recently ‘Tune Maari Entriyaan’, among others. He also made his debut as an actor in Kishor Kumar’s ‘Badhti ka Naam Daadi’.

But did you know that apart from being famous as a singer-musician-actor, Bappi Lahiri was also an author? In 2018, Bappi Lahiri’s book ‘We Are One World: Peace, Love and Harmony’ was released in US, Canada and UK. The book has Lahiri’s songs and poems, which were dedicated to communal amity. “I always wanted to do something for humanity, spread the message of love propagated by my Sharaabi chartbuster ‘De De Pyaar De’,” he said in an interview to Mumbai Mirror.

Bappi Lahiri said that his inspiration Mother Teresa had blessed him, but she also pointed out that though he made a name for himself he didn’t do anything for slum children. That’s why he had made a film ‘Slum Stars’ and got some children from slums to sing in the movie. “If this book does well, I’ll build a school for them,” Bappi Lahiri had told Mumbai Mirror.

Just two days before his death, Bappi Lahiri had posted a picture of himself on Instagram with the caption: Old is always gold.

The Disco King had also shared a rare picture of himself with Lata Mangeshkar, remembering the legendary singer a few days ago.

Bappi Lahiri last worked on ‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’ as a musician in September 2021. Meanwhile, he was last seen on-screen with Salman Khan in one Bigg Boss 15’s weekend episodes. He will forever be remembered for his immense contribution to Indian music and cinema.
