Twitter user @TrungTPhan took to the micro-blogging platform to share a photo of the sandwich. In the photo, we can see two sandwiches – one is cut diagonally and the other one is cut down the middle. “The geometry is too complicated to explain here but cutting a sandwich diagonally gives you more sandwich,” read the text in the photo. While in the image, the sandwich that is cut diagonally certainly looks bigger, there is no evidence to prove this fact. Take a look at the tweet here:

Since being shared, the tweet has amassed over 9.8 million views, 42.4K likes and thousands of retweets. This dilemma about the best way to cut a sandwich sparked a debate among Twitteratis. While some people agreed that a diagonally-cut sandwich gives you more portion size, others seemed to disagree with this explanation. A few users also stated that they don’t prefer to cut their sandwiches at all. One person wrote, “Wrong. If you cut the sandwiches on the right diagonally you’ll now get more sandwiches. It’s called a second-order consequential sandwich.”
Another person wrote, “There’s actually a valid reason behind the diagonal cut, but it escapes true mathematicians.”
“No matter how you cut it, you always have less sandwich when you cut it. Some of it always sticks to the knife,” read a third comment.
