Deceased Jawan’s family, village in Murshidabad in a state of shock

The family of Shyamal Das, deceased jawan of Assam Rifles, in Murshidabad’s Khargram was in a state of grief and shock, as was his entire village.

Das spoke to his wife last time not long before he was killed on Saturday morning.

“My husband told me he will not be able to speak during the day as he will be driving the vehicle and will reach the army headquarters in the evening. He was driving the commanding officer’s family in Manipur and asked me not to call him. Then, we were informed that he died in an ambush attack,” Suparna Das, who has a five-year-old child, told ET.

Five Assam Rifles soldiers, including a commanding officer, and their two family members lost their lives in the terrorist attack in Churachandpur district of Manipur on Saturday.

Das’ body was expected to reach home on Monday morning. His entire village appeared to have gathered near his house.

“A senior officer called me and informed me about the incident last afternoon. It was painful to inform my father-in-law and mother-in-law about the attack,” said Suparna.

Das belonged to a rural household, where most of the family was engaged in farming. He had joined the Army 11 years ago and he was the sole earner, his father said, adding, “We don’t know how to survive now and make our ends meet.”

His father urged the administration to provide help to the family as there was no else to support it. “How do we bring up the child when my son is no more. We need some help from the government,” said his mother.

Das last visited the village a month ago and he was scheduled to come home in January, said one of his friends in the village.
