Deandre Hopkins free agency leaves NFL executives split on what the ex-Cardinal has left in tank 

Three-time NFL All-Pro wide receiver Deandre Hopkins hired a new agent amid his free agency – however NFL teams appear to be spilt on just how much of an impact Hopkins can make going forward.

Well-noted NFL reporter Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated recently opened up about conversations he had with several league executives that revealed the mix feelings around the league for the soon-to-be 31-year-old.

‘Not much. He can’t run anymore,’ one executive reportedly told Breer via text message. 

A different executive expressed a completely different sentiment, however, by saying ‘He’s still a good player. Good route runner, big, physical target that can play a ball in the air. He’s still a threat.’

A third executive, Breer revealed. who worked for an AFC team expressed much more detailed thoughts on Hopkins that fell down the middle of being either pro or anti-Hopkins.

Hopkins recently signed with Klutch Sports Group to represent him during his free agency 

‘Still great hands, he is not going to separate, not much of a deep threat, but very strong, and makes contested catches as well as anyone in the NFL,’ the exec said. 

‘Does not love to practice—I can’t imagine that’ll get any better. And when things don’t go well, you’re always gonna be leery, All right, what kind of drama are we gonna get from this guy? When things are great, he’s great. When things go south, his true colors show a little bit.

‘But he always shows up on game day. He’s gonna have to go to a team that knows what they’re getting. You cannot expect a perfect-attendance type of worker.’

During his final season with Arizona, Hopkins recorded 717 yards, 64 receptions, and 3 touchdowns after only playing in nine games largely due to a suspension after testing positive for PEDs.

And in his career Hopkins has been named to five Pro Bowls and recorded six seasons 1,000 or more receiving yards. 

Hopkins is said to have had talks with the Buffalo Bills and Chiefs, however his reported wanting of a $15million in base salary in the model of the contract the Baltimore Ravens gave Odell Beckham Jr – despite missing all of last season – could be a deterrent.

Sports Illustrated claimed the price point became a hurdle in his talks with the Chiefs, who eventually gave the money allocated to Hopkins to left tackle Donovan Smith, which will surely make negotiations difficult to build on if they were to try again.

Hopkins was also in talks with the Kansas City Chiefs, but contract negotiations fell through

Buffalo would also prefer to give Hopkins and incentive-laden contact with a lower base salary.

He has missed 15 of 34 games over the past two years after playing in 126 of 128 during his first eight seasons.

Bills pass rusher Von Miller has been very vocal in trying to recruit Hopkins to Buffalo this offseason, while Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson also recently has tried to speak Hopkins rejoining forces with him into existence.

‘I’ll just say this, D-Hop, DeAndre Hopkins would love to be in a place where the opportunity is there for us to win,’ Watson said.

‘We check all those boxes and I think for us to know and make sure we check all those boxes on the national stage, we’ve got to go out there and prove it and I think D-Hop would love to be a part of that.’
