Danny Murphy has backed Sean Dyche to get the best out of Dele Alli at Everton given the former Burnley boss’ non-nonsense attitude.

Dele returned to Goodison Park at the end of the previous campaign after picking up an injury on loan at Besiktas in Turkey.

It has been a startling fall from grace for one of England’s brightest talents, having struggled to replicate the hugely impressive performances he put in at Tottenham for a number of years.

On his return from Turkey Dele’s reputation plummeted further after being pictured with nitrous oxide canisters and booze in April, adding to the speculation over his future at Everton under Dyche.

Yet Murphy believes that it does not have to be the end for the midfielder at Everton, and that Dyche – a well-known disciplinarian – will also be able to give the 27-year-old a guiding hand as he looks to get his career back on track.

The former Burnley boss is a well-known disciplinarian and is unlikely to settle for anything less than 100 per cent effort from Alli

The 27-year-old suffered a disappointing loan spell at Besiktas scoring just three goals in 15 games

‘I’d say yes,’ said Murphy, when asked whether the 52-year-old would be able to get the best out of his player. ‘He won’t take any nonsense, but he’ll also help him a little bit.

‘I’m not suggesting you have to do one or the other all the time… I think Sean Dyche’s got it in him to occasionally put his arm around him and help him along.

‘My gut feeling is where Dele Alli’s come from, what I’ve heard about the upbringing he’s had and the type of lad he is, I do think he needs a bit of love.

‘But I think more importantly he needs a ruthless manager who’s going to really push him and kick him up the backside.’

The 27-year-old appears set to receive a chance to prove himself under Dyche, after being included in the Toffees’ travelling pre-season squad, bound for Switzerland.

Dele is yet to play for Dyche at Goodison Park, despite signing almost exactly a year before the former Burnley boss, as he was sent out on loan to Besiktas to help recover some form.

However things did not turn out quite the way either party will have wanted in Turkey, as the player managed just 15 games all season, scoring three times and failing to record a single assist.

And although Murphy has back Dyche to help get the best out of the midfielder, he doubts Dele will ever be able to return to the heights he showed at Tottenham early in his career.

‘Moving all that aside, do I think he will reach the heights of before? I don’t think so. I think it’s too far back to come. I still think he can have a decent career in the game. He’s got to be looking for a Premier League club.’

The former Liverpool, Fulham and Spurs star also added that there may be more to Dele’s fall than meets the eye.

‘The point I’m making with Dele Alli is he could’ve been through some things we don’t know and he doesn’t want to talk about,’ added Murphy.

‘But there comes a point where you have to have some resilience and desire to get back to doing what you love doing.’
