Cyclone Biparjoy: High tides in Mumbai, Gujarat on alert, IMD predicts rainfall
Cyclone Biparjoy, located over the east-central Arabian Sea, moving north-eastwards at a speed of 8 kmph over the past six hours is expected to continue its north-northeastward movement and make landfall as a very severe cyclonic storm on Thursday. The cyclone intensified into an “extremely severe cyclonic storm” on Sunday morning.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that the cyclone is projected to cross the Saurashtra and Kutch regions, as well as the adjoining coasts of Pakistan, between Mandvi in Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan around noon on 15 June.

1) Some reports have claimed that the landfall location could be anywhere between Kutch and Porbandar and it will weaken a bit before landfall on 15 or 16 June.
2) The exact place where it will make landfall will become clearer in the coming days, senior scientist at the IMD, D.S. Pai told PTI.
3) Officials at the Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla at Gujarat’s Kutch have started shifting people from low-lying areas to temporary shelters.
4) Om Prakash, the Public Relations Officer of Deendayal Port Authority, in Gujarat’s Kandla said that six ships have left the port and 11 more will be departing today.
5) “It is very likely to move nearly northward till the 14th morning, then move north-northeastwards and cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) around noon of 15th June as a very severe cyclonic storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph,” IMD tweeted.
6) Mumbai also started witnessing high tide waves on Monday as cyclone Biparjoy intensified into a severe cyclonic storm.
7) The weather office has also advised a total suspension of fishing operations in the region till June 15 and has asked fishermen to not venture into central Arabian sea, north Arabian sea during June 12-15, and along and off Saurashtra-Kutch coasts till June 15.
8) The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in Pakistan has put the authorities concerned on high alert as Cyclone Biparjoy is gaining strength and has now turned into an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm (ESCS).
9) It is likely to affect the south and south-eastern regions of Sindh on Tuesday.
10) NDMA has instructed authorities to run an awareness campaign in the local language to inform people in the coastal areas regarding weather conditions and advise them against visiting the shorelines.
