Cubs manager David Ross launches expletive-laden rant at home plate umpire in 7-4 win over Yankees
Cubs manager David Ross launches expletive-laden rant at home plate umpire after being ejected for the FOURTH time this season in 7-4 win over the Yankees
Chicago Cubs manager David Ross was ejected from his team’s win against the New York Yankees on Sunday after laying into home plate umpire Alex MacKay with a few cuss words, following a pitching call, and prior to the start of the All-Star break.
Ross – a two-time World Series champ’ who’s in his fourth season as Cubs manager – got tossed in the bottom of the first when he seemingly disagreed with a call going against Chicago’s starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks.
The 46-year-old, who’s been in charge of the Cubs since 2020, stormed out of the dugout and onto the field at Yankees Stadium to share his thoughts on MacKay’s officiating, which was picked up by the Yankees’ broadcasters.
‘You gotta do better,’ mics gathered from Ross’ explicit rant at MacKay as he nearly butted heads with the umpire. ‘You’ve got one god d*** game before you get a break and you’re that f***king bad already?’
Ross’ tirade didn’t end there, as he appeared to have let out another expletive at McKay before leaving the field, though the swearing wasn’t picked up as the Yankees broadcast crew was talking over the field mic.

Sunday’s game was the fourth time that Ross was ejected this season and it was the 14th of the former catcher’s managerial career with the Cubs. He’s only a dismissal away form matching Yankees manager Aaron Boone’s five ejections through the first half of the current MLB season.
‘I think he didn´t like me yelling anymore,’ Ross said of his ejection postgame.
Six innings after their manager’s tossing, Cubs catcher Yan Gomes hit a tying pinch-hit two-run single in the seventh following a fielding error by second baseman Gleyber Torres and Seiya Suzuki hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth to give Chicago a 7-4 victory over New York.

Mike Tauchman opened the eighth with a single off Ron Marinaccio (4-4) before Nico Hoerner and Ian Happ walked.
Suzuki, who hit a home run in the fifth for the Cubs’ only hit off Domingo Germán, followed with a sacrifice fly off Clay Holmes as the Yankees deployed a five-man infield and Tauchman easily scored when right fielder Giancarlo Stanton’s throw was slightly up the line.
‘I just wanted to get that run in from third and as you can see there were five infielders,’ Suzuki said through a translator. ‘So the best I could do was hit that sacrifice fly. I was glad I was able to do that.’

Hoerner scored the sixth run when Holmes threw a wild pitch over catcher Kyle Higashioka´s glove to the backstop and Tucker Barnhart added an RBI double in the ninth.
‘That’s a really nice team win, something I think we needed going into the break,’ Ross said after his side’s second win of a three-game series against the Yankees.
‘These guys have fought really hard. The way we’ve come back here lately has been really impressive.’
After the game, New York fired hitting coach Dillon Lawson. The Yankees offense has struggled since star right fielder Aaron Judge’s injury on June 3. The Yankees dropped to 14-17 since losing Judge to a torn ligament in his right big toe.
The Cubs (42-47) won for the fifth time in 14 games since getting to within a game of .500 following a 9-1 win over St. Louis June 24 in London.
