CSK vs RCB match notches 24 million concurrent viewers on JioCinema

JioCinema has set a new concurrency record for an Indian Premier League (IPL) match, with the Chennai Super Kings vs. Rajasthan Royals game clocking 24 million concurrent viewers.

This is the highest-ever concurrent viewership for an IPL match, Viacom18 said. JioCinema, the official streaming partner of the IPL, has been streaming IPL matches free for all internet viewers. The last over of the second innings of the match, in which Chennai won the match by 8 runs, saw the concurrent viewership on JioCinema touch 24 million.

Viacom18 claimed that the streaming app has been adding millions of new viewers for the IPL on a daily basis.

Earlier, Viacom18 Sports CEO Anil Jayaraj had stated that the ongoing IPL season will break the digital concurrency record held by Disney+ Hotstar for India vs. New Zealand match.

The Star India-owned streaming platform had 25.3 million concurrent viewers for the semi-final match between India and New Zealand during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

He also stated that JioCinema had reached over 35 million people on Connected TV (CTV). “IPL viewership on digital is not just on mobile digital, but is also doing well at the top of the pyramid on CTV,” he said.

Recently, the Chennai Super Kings vs. Rajasthan Royals match on JioCinema drew a record-breaking 22 million concurrent viewers. Prior to that, Disney+ Hotstar held the record for the highest concurrent viewership, with 18.6 million watching the final match of the 2019 IPL season. The streaming app has roped in 23 sponsors for the tournament. Viacom18 had roped in Dream11 as a co-presenting sponsor, along with JioMart, PhonePe, and Tiago EV as co-powered sponsors.

The associate sponsors included Appy Fizz, ET Money, Castrol, TVS, Oreo, Bingo, Sting, AJIO, Haier, RuPay, Louis Philippe Jeans, Amazon, Rapido, Ultra Tech Cement, Puma, Kamla Pasand, Kingfisher Power Soda, Jindal Panther TMT Rebar, and Indeed.

Earlier, Viacom18 had stated that JioCinema’s free streaming of the IPL 2023 for all viewers in India had resulted in 375 crore video views in the first week. In the first weekend, the platform had amassed 147 crore views.

The season-opening clash between MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings and Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans achieved a peak concurrency of 1.6 crores on JioCinema.

Furthermore, the JioCinema app registered over 2.5 crore downloads, which is a record for the most installed app in a single day.
