Cricket team’s bonkers fielding set-up goes viral

Finland’s cricket team employed a rather unusual fielding strategy that had to be seen to be believed, as cricket fans were left in stitches.

You don’t see a slips cordon quite like this very often, if at all.

But if you’re the Finnish national cricket team, sometimes you just have to throw caution to the wind to get that victory.

Finland took on the England XI in the European Cricket Championship, and with the first ball of the match, Finnish captain Jonathan Scamans set his field to let the English know they meant business.

But to many cricket fans, the fielding set-up looked like something straight out of a video game.

One commentator couldn’t quite believe what he was witnessing in front of him either.

“Oh my goodness gracious me, look at this field,” the commentator said.

“We’ve got eight slips, and a leg slip for the first ball of the match to be bowled by Amjad Sher.

“Well, this is extraordinary.”

Cricket fans were also scratching their heads over the bizarre set-up, as social media was sent into a frenzy.

What began with good intentions quickly faded, as England smacked 113 runs off its 10 overs.

Finland only mustered up 99 runs in its 10 overs, leaving the English XI as winners by 14 runs.

The result sees England maintain top spot in Group C of the European Cricket Championship, and have only lost one game in the eight they have played.

As for Finland, they have enjoyed just the won victory from eight.

Who knows, the Finns may have more success if they can set their field in a more appropriate manner from the first ball.
