Cowboys QB Dak Prescott had surgery on non-throwing shoulder

Dallas Cowboys starting quarterback Dak Prescott ultimately made a triumphant return from the compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle he suffered in October 2020 but not before he dealt with a shoulder issue last summer. Prescott later missed what became a win at the Minnesota Vikings on Halloween with a calf strain, but Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy delivered interesting news Tuesday when he announced his QB1 had surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder last week, per Todd Archer of ESPN.

McCarthy added the procedure was a “clean up” and, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, also said there is currently “no concern” about Prescott being a full participant in the offseason program.

Archer notes Prescott’s left shoulder was never mentioned on any official injury report throughout the season even though McCarthy admitted Tuesday the issue was an “irritant” as the campaign progressed. It’s unknown if the Cowboys will be accused of violating NFL rules regarding the reporting of player injuries or even if the league will look into the matter.

The last time fans saw Prescott in action, he completed 23-of-43 passes for 254 yards with one touchdown and one interception in the wild-card postseason loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Jan. 16. It seems he’s not in danger of missing any meaningful prep time later this year, but his status may be something to keep an eye on this spring and/or summer.
