It’s been nearly a week since Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy allowed quarterback Dak Prescott to shockingly run a draw up the middle with no timeouts in hand in the closing seconds of what became a home playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Prescott was unable to properly spike the football before the clock expired with the Cowboys trailing by six points.
Since then, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told local radio station 105.3 The Fan he “absolutely” believed McCarthy would keep his job through the offseason, and McCarthy said on Wednesday he’s had “very positive conversations” with team owner and general manager Jerry Jones about his future. He also said the play call at the end of the San Francisco game was the right decision.
Jerry Jones had a chance to silence any questions about McCarthy’s future during a Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan. He didn’t quite go in that direction.
“I’m not going to get into any conversations that I’ve had with anybody relative to anything to do with the staff,” Jones said, according to Todd Archer of ESPN. “I understand the interest in it, but there’s nothing compelling me. I’ve got everyone under contract that I want to have under contract. And so that’s where we are.”
Jones admitted he was “very, very frustrated and upset” with how Dallas’ season ended last weekend, and he’s willing to make changes “at any level that would improve us.”
Also interestingly, Jones said that McCarthy and company addressing issues such as penalties following an elimination defeat isn’t good enough. The Cowboys were penalized 14 times for 89 yards against the 49ers.
“So all of that is in the mix here and a part of what I do. … The ultimate decision on these coaches and anywhere around here is one that I have to make, so the guy that you’re the toughest on should be the one in the mirror,” Jones remarked. “He’s the one that has the ultimate responsibility and consequently I get to operate at that guy’s timeline.”
In short, McCarthy having access to the Star as of Friday afternoon seemingly doesn’t guarantee he’ll be welcome on the campus by Monday evening.
