Covid surge fails to alter India Inc’s work pattern
After weathering multiple waves of the pandemic, corporate India says it is much more confident about handling the situation, and with employees now fully vaccinated, most companies are not bringing in any changes to the existing work-from-office or hybrid arrangements.
ET spoke to executives at several companies including Deloitte, Vedanta Group,
, , , EY, PepsiCo and the RPG Group which confirmed that currently there are no new changes on the work arrangement front, though safety protocols have been stepped up. Employees showing any symptoms of Covid are urged to stay at home. These firms are also trying to ensure that employees are not only double-vaccinated, but have also taken the booster dose. Wearing masks at offices and daily temperature checks of employees have become a norm.
“We are continuing to run our offices as usual and have tightened Covid protocols,” said Group chief HR officer Madhu Shrivastava.
From August 1, Vedanta has completely opened up its corporate offices in Delhi and Mumbai and is back to 100% attendance overall. It has also facilitated booster doses for those eligible across all locations including employees, business partners and their families.
With people getting vaccinated, symptoms are milder and the disease is largely under control, Shrivastava said. “We have seen the waves; now we are much more confident of how we can manage in terms of protocols. The learning has happened over a period of time,” she added.
At Deloitte, about a third or so of employees are coming to offices as of now. “For those getting infected, we have Covid leaves on a self-declared basis,” said chief talent officer SV Nathan.
Companies are encouraging employees to stay at home when unwell. Firms like Deloitte and PepsiCo, which had introduced Covid-19 leaves in the beginning of the pandemic, continue to have these in place and employees getting infected or re-infected are availing of the facility.
At Lupin, employees showing symptoms are being asked to stay at home. “Over the last two months, we have ensured that all employees get booster shots,” said its president, global HR, Yashwant Mahadik. The company has all its people back at work from offices.
As part of Titan’s latest advisory, employees are being urged to stay at home if not well or have been in primary contact. “No questions are asked here,” said Swadesh Behera, its chief people officer. Even as almost all employees are back to the work-from-office mode, Titan offers flexibility where needed. “We encourage our leaders and managers to offer employees the flexibility to work from home, especially with the surge in Covid-19 cases,” said Behera.
Panasonic is 100% back at work from the office, said CHRO Adarsh Mishra. “We have taken precautionary measures to enhance safety at our offices. We have been extremely cautious of opening up travel,” Mishra said.
