Covid or not, work from home likely to continue for many

India Inc is continuing with remote working options for employees despite Covid-19 cases ebbing once again and some companies are even hiring for permanent work-from-home roles, a recent survey conducted by CIEL HR exclusively for ET has said. More than 50% of companies are keeping the remote working option open for employees, it said.

Executives at several companies that ET spoke with confirmed that the flexible working model, which was adopted in 2020 amid the nationwide lockdown to check the spread of the pandemic, is going to continue in the long run. Some companies like Mondelez and

said they are hiring for permanent work-from-home (WFH) roles, while many others including , and are either following a location-agnostic approach for certain roles or embracing partial remote working model, with employees coming to office for a couple of days in a week, in the long run.

“While there is no change in salaries of existing workforce working in remote roles, those being hired for remote roles on a permanent basis are getting 15% lower salaries,” said Aditya Mishra, chief executive of CIEL HR Services. The survey suggested that 10% of new hires are likely to be in permanent remote roles.

CIEL HR mapped about 600 companies across domains like IT, ITeS, ecommerce, BFSI, recruitment, consulting, and edtech with the help of close to 1,000 respondents.

“We are considering remote roles in a limited manner as we aim to stay agile and adopt practices and policies that best serve both our business and colleagues,” said Shilpa Vaid, head, HR at Mondelez India. There is no pay differentiation between work from office and remote employees, she told ET.

Back in December 2020, steel major Tata Steel had implemented an ‘Agile Working Model’ policy. Under this, the job positions were classified into two categories: ‘absolute work from home’, wherein the employee can work from any location in India, and ‘flexi work from home’, wherein the officers who are required to be based out of a particular location can work from home for unlimited days in a year.

“We are hiring people for both kinds of positions based on the business needs. There is no differentiation in salary based on employees’ availability at office,” a Tata Steel spokesperson said.

Maruti Suzuki is following a hybrid model of working. “Flexibility has been induced in the system that encourages a model wherein productivity and efficiency could be maintained irrespective of the work location of the employee,” Rajesh Uppal, member of the executive board at

, told ET.

Most big organisations are providing permanent WFH to certain roles while others are working on a hybrid model, according to the CIEL survey.

As per its findings, over 50% of employees in the mid-sized IT/ITeS, banking, infrastructure, retail, chemical, logistics, and manufacturing sectors are working from offices.
