Coromandel train accident: The Coromandel Express train on Friday derailed in Odisha’s Balasore district, killing at least 50 passengers while over 350 are reported to be injured. A survivor of the accident has shared the glaring details of the Coromandel train accident and said that when came out of the derailed train, he saw people were badly injured.
“I suddenly woke up from my sleep as the train derailed and around 10-15 people crashed on my body. I am hurt, there is pain in my hand. When I came out of the train I saw many people severely injured, someone was without hand, or without leg,” the survivor of the accident said.
Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw rushed to the Coromandel train accident spot and also announced relief for the victims of the tragedy. “Ex-gratia compensation to the victims of this unfortunate train accident in Odisha; ₹10 Lakh in case of death, ₹2 Lakh towards grievous and ₹50,000 for minor injuries,” the railway minister said in a tweet.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed distress over the Coromandel train accident in Odisha and assured all possible assistance to the affected.
“Distressed by the train accident in Odisha. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Spoke to Railway Minister @AshwiniVaishnaw and took stock of the situation. Rescue ops are underway at the site of the mishap and all possible assistance is being given to those affected,” PM Modi said in a tweet.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also offered his condolences for the victims of the tragedy and said, “Anguished by the tragic news of the accident involving the Coromandel Express, in Balasore, Odisha. My heart goes out to the bereaved families. Wishing for the speedy recovery of those injured. I urge Congress workers & leaders to extend all support needed for rescue efforts.”
