Soon after, Gudur Narayana Reddy, the leader of the Telangana BJP, filed a complaint against the filmmaker slamming his comment on the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu. “This tweet is tantamount to disrespecting the SC and ST people. Here, he calls ‘Draupadi’ the President. We would have had no objections if he had only mentioned Draupadi, Pandavas and Kauravas. We, the BJP workers, are hurt at such comments by RGV,” Reddy told ANI. Ram Gopal Varma soon tweeted an explanation about his comments and wrote, “This was said just in an earnest irony and not intended in any other way ..Draupadi in Mahabharata is my faviourate character but Since the name is such a rarity I just remembered the associated characters and hence my expression. Not at all intended to hurt sentiments of anyone.” According to Times now, Ram Gopal Varma’s comments had also offended BJP MLA T Raja Singh, who said, “Varma always tries to be in the news by making such controversial comments.”
Earlier this year, RGV had joined the north versus south debate after Ajay Devgn slammed Kichcha Sudeep’s statement that, “Hindi is not our national language”. Sharing his thoughts on the same, the filmmaker had tweeted, “The base undeniable ground truth @KicchaSudeep sir, is that the north stars are insecure and jealous of the south stars because a Kannada dubbing film #KGF2 had a 50 crore opening day and we all are going to see the coming opening days of Hindi films.”
