Commonwealth Games: Indian Judoka Tulika Maan claims Silver; Tejaswin Shankar bags bronze in Men’s high jump

Indian Judoka Tulika Maan claimed Silver medal in women’s 78 kg category after suffering a defeat against Scotland’s Sarah Adlington at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. This is India’s third medal in Judo this Commonwealth Games.

Indian weightlifter Gurdeep Singh bagged the bronze medal in the men’s 109-plus kg final with a combined weight of 390kg.

India’s Saurav Ghosal clinched the bronze medal in squash men’s singles by beating James Willstrop of England 11-6, 11-1, 11-4.

Ghosal, who had won the silver medal in the mixed doubles event in Gold Coast in 2018, gave the Englishman no chance whatsoever in one of the most one-sided medal matches of CWG. This was Ghosal’s first medal at the Commonwealth Games in men’s singles.

India’s Tejaswin Shankar won India’s first medal in athletics at the Commonwealth games 2022, by clinching a historic bronze in the men’s high jump final. Tejaswin, competing for India for the first time in four years, nailed a landing of 2.22m to secure a podium finish.

Lovepreet Singh bagged a bronze medal in men’s 109kg weightliftling while setting a national record in the clean and jerk round.

Indian Women beat Canada 3-2 to qualify for the Hockey semi-final.

In Boxing, three Indian pugilists, including Nikhat Zareen, advanced to the semifinals in their respective events after thrilling victories.

In Women’s Cricket, India qualified for the semi-finals of the Commonwealth Games cricket after beating Barbados by 100 runs in a Group A match at Edgbaston in Birmingham. Chasing a total of 163, Barbados were restricted to 62 for eight in the 20 overs. For India, Renuka Singh scalped four wickets.

India is now at 7th position with 18 medals which includes five gold, six silver and 7 bronze.

President Droupadi Murmu has congratulated Tulika Maan for putting up a spirited fight and winning silver medal in judo at Commonwealth Games.  In a tweet, she said Tulika Maan has shown remarkable courage and passion to succeed at a young age.

Ms Murmu also congratulated Gurdeep Singh for an excellent effort and winning the bronze medal in weightlifting at Commonwealth Games. She said, he has made India proud with his podium finish and spirited lifting. The President also congratulated Sourav Ghosal for winning bronze medal in Squash men’s singles at Commonwealth Games. She said, India is proud of him as he has broken a new ground by winning for India its first medal in men’s singles squash.

 

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has congratulated Tejaswin Shankar on winning a Bronze medal in the Men’s High Jump event at  Commonwealth Games. In a tweet, Mr Naidu said that this historic win will inspire many youngsters to take up the sport. He also congratulated Gurdeep Singh on winning a Bronze medal in Men’s 109kg event at Commonwealth Games. Mr Naidu said that the fantastic performances and continued success of our weightlifters at Commonwealth Games will motivate many budding weightlifters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Tejaswin Shankar for winning the Bronze medal in Men’s High Jump at Commonwealth Games. In a tweet, Mr Modi said that Tejaswin Shankar has created history as he won country’s first high jump medal at Commonwealth Games. He said, he is proud of his efforts and extended his wishes for his future endeavours.

The Prime Minister also congratulated and extended his best wishes to Gurdeep Singh for winning Bronze medal in weightlifting at Commonwealth Games. Mr Modi said that his hardwork and dedication leads to outstanding outcomes and Gurdeep Singh has furthered the spirit of joy among our citizens.

Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Thakur has congratulated Tejaswin Shankar for winning the Bronze medal in Men’s High Jump at Commonwealth Games. In a tweet, Mr Thakur said, he is the first-ever Indian athlete to win a medal in high jump at CWG. Mr Thakur congratulated Tejaswan Shankar on creating history and also winning his first medal win at CWG.

Mr Thakur also congratulated Gurdeep Singh for winning Bronze medal. He said, Gurdeep Singh has brought home the 10th medal in weightlifting at CWG. Her said, the entire contingent has been brilliant.
