The Indianapolis Colts acquired quarterback Carson Wentz from the Philadelphia Eagles at the start of the NFL year last March for what ultimately became a 2021 third-round draft pick and 2022 first-round selection, per Mike Kaye of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. That gamble went poorly for the Colts, as they dropped the last two games of the campaign to miss the playoffs and now are in the early stages of what could become a long and cold offseason.
In a message released Wednesday, Colts owner Jim Irsay vowed “to do whatever it takes to put us in a position to win next year and for years to come,” while head coach Frank Reich refused to guarantee Wentz will be atop his depth chart at the sport’s most important position when the 2022 preseason opens in August.
On Thursday, general manager Chris Ballard also didn’t commit to keeping Wentz as the Colts’ starter.
“I’m not going to make a comment on who is going to be here next year and who is not,” Ballard said about the Indianapolis roster, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.
Per Spotrac, Wentz’s contract allows the Colts to save slightly over $13 million in salary-cap space with a dead-cap hit of $15 million if they release the 29-year-old. That deal carries no dead-cap hit beyond the 2022 season, though, so Indianapolis may have Wentz run it back on what, essentially, could become a one-year “prove it” agreement.
