Collingwood and the AFL are blasted for soft ‘non-penalty’ against Jordan De Goey
‘The actions did NOT back up the words’: Collingwood and the AFL are blasted for soft ‘non-penalty’ against Jordan De Goey after Pies bad boy was hit with suspended $25,000 fine for Bali antics
- Collingwood and the AFL’s stance on Jordan de Goey has been blasted
- The Pies star was handed a suspended $25,000 fine for his antics in Bali
- However, Fox Sports pundit Mark Robinson believes it was a ‘non-penalty’
Fox Sports pundit Mark Robinson has launched a scathing attack on the AFL and Collingwood for the ‘non-penalty’ handed to Magpies star Jordan de Goey following his antics in Bali.
De Goey received a $25,000 fine on Tuesday after footage emerged of the midfielder pulling down a woman’s top on a night out during the AFL club’s mid-season break.
The penalty is suspended until the end of the season, pending good behaviour, with Pies with CEO Mark Anderson saying De Goey’s actions had ‘demonstrated disrespect towards women’.

However, De Goey is available for selection this week and News Corp journalist Robinson said he was ‘staggered’ by the leniency of the punishment given the 26-year-old’s record of off-field indiscretions.
‘I’m quite staggered that the AFL and Collingwood (didn’t come down harder). The way Mark Anderson spoke in the press release first and then spoke really strong, really powerful words, but the actions didn’t back up the words,’ he said on AFL360.
‘A $25,000 suspended fine, it’s not a penalty, it’s an ‘if you do it again’ punishment.
‘Well, he might not do it again, so what’s the punishment? Other than the gross embarrassment that is surrounding Jordan at the moment … Collingwood is just tough talking, but the actions aren’t really fitting.’

Robinson added that the softness of the penalty is a backwards step for the AFL – with the league working hard to promote the women’s game.
‘I’m really disappointed in the AFL, I’m incredibly disappointed. Don’t sit there, AFL and Collingwood, and tell everyone from your soapbox that respect for women is paramount and then oversee a non-penalty,’ he said.
‘What are women supposed to think about this? I wish we had a table of 10 women right now and said what do you think about the events of today, and see what they honestly think … women have every right to sit there and ask the AFL and Collingwood and the two female football teams and two netball teams at Collingwood, they have every right to walk in and say ‘What’s going on? What is going on here? How many chances does this dude get in life?’
Fox Sports pundit Mark Robinson claims Collingwood needed to be tougher on De Goey
The pundit suggested that a more just penalty would have been a flat $25,000 fine.
Meanwhile, Gerard Whateley expressed fear that the saga in Bali could de-rail Collingwood’s season, with Craig McRae’s side well and truly in finals contention.
‘The last time we saw Collingwood’s they were buoyant, that’s the best word I can think of. They go on their breather, they reconvene and their club is under siege on the actions of one player and they have all fronted up to that over the past two days while he hasn’t,’ Whateley said.
‘If this goes pear-shaped from here, it’s not hard to imagine the level of resentment that is there.’
