College football rankings: 5 teams completely overhyped in 2022 coaches poll

The coaches have spoken, so let’s see what they got wrong in their college football rankings.

With the season right around the corner, it is always great to dissect preseason college football rankings, such as the ole coaches poll.

The Preseason USA TODAY Top 25 coaches poll was released in earnest on Monday afternoon. While we may have to wait a tad longer to get the AP Poll, this one will have to do for now. Not until the College Football Playoff Selection Committee meets in DFW, these two polls will be our guiding light through all the madness. Now, what in tarnation did the coaches get so wrong here?

Here is what the coaches think about their contemporaries’ programs heading into the season.

Your top five are Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson and Notre Dame. Michigan, Texas A&M, Utah, Oklahoma and Baylor round out the top 10. 11 through 15 are Oklahoma State, Oregon, North Carolina State, Michigan State and USC. 16 through 20 are Pittsburgh, Miami, Texas, Wake Forest and Wisconsin. Kentucky, Cincinnati, Arkansas, Ole Miss and Houston round out the top 25.

Now that we know how the coaches feel about their teams, how should we feel about them?

Here are five college teams the coaches feel higher about more than they probably should be.

Texas Longhorns

Texas is the second biggest hype machine in-state after them Dallas Cowboys

Fueled by a never-ending supply of hype that only the NFL‘s Dallas Cowboys could ever hope to rival, the coaches want to believe Texas is about to be back, baby! In due time, they very well might be. However, this defense lacks heart and who will be their starting quarterback? It may have been “All Gas, No Brakes” to land Arch Manning, but Steve Sarkisian needs to get to a bowl game first.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Marcus Freeman can totally recruit, but will he win taking over at Notre Dame?

Brian Kelly’s departure from South Bend was shocking to say the least. While it made sense to promote Marcus Freeman from within, had Notre Dame waited a few weeks, they could have had Freeman’s former boss in Luke Fickell. While Freeman is an ace recruiter, a Fiesta Bowl collapse to Oklahoma State was not ideal. Next up: Freeman’s alma mater in the Horseshoe. Good luck, Irish!

Brent Venables is at the epicenter over Oklahoma’s most chaotic offseason ever

Brent Venables may be the right man for the job in Norman, but this is the most chaotic offseason ever for OU. The Lincoln Riley exodus was only rivaled by Kelly’s Irish goodbye. With players and coaches departing, on their own terms or not, Venables has to find stability amidst the chaos in his first year on the job. He can so do it, but the Sooners have to prove they are top-10 worthy first.

Oregon Ducks

Dan Lanning will experience major growing pains in his first year leading Oregon

Dan Landing was cheesin’ big time when he got the big job in Eugene. Kirby Smart’s former defensive coordinator now leads his first Power Five team. Oregon is a sweet job out on the West Coast, but he has to play his former employer in Uncle Arthur’s spaceship down in Atlanta right from the jump. He must turn to … Bo Nix, a man who has never beat Georgia in three SEC chances.

Pittsburgh Panthers

No Jordan Addison, Kenny Pickett or Mark Whipple for these Pittsburgh Panthers

No wonder Pat Narduzzi is battery-throwing mad of late. The Pitt head football coach lost his best player in Kenny Pickett, his best potential returning player in Jordan Addison and his best assistant in Mark Whipple this offseason. Pitt may have won the ACC a year ago, but Kedon Slovis better really sling it after transferring for soccer girlfriend reasons. They have the Backyard Brawl to win.

Ultimately, there are a few common threads among these teams. Whether it is coaching changes, offseason turmoil or a new guy running the offense at quarterback, all coaches believe in themselves alright, because of course, they do. However, being a bit removed from the X’s and O’s, we can look at their Jimmys and Joes and say these five programs are probably a bit overhyped.

Here is to being wrong because that is the beauty of college football; any zany thing can happen.
