Chrysler pulls out of Australia

A manufacturer with strong ties to the local market has pulled out of Australia, joining Holden in being consigned to automotive history.

Chrysler will stop selling cars in Australia this year, bringing an end to the era of affordable V8-powered sedans.

The 6.4-litre Chrysler 300 SRT is the only sub-$100,000 V8 on sale today.

BMW’s $168,000 M550i will soon be the cheapest V8 sedan on sale, putting the once-popular motor and body style out of reach for many drivers.

Around 30 of the machines remain in dealers. Production of the muscle car has finished in the US, where the Chrysler 300 is not sold with the powerful Hemi V8 found on our shores.

Australia was the sole right-hand-drive market for the machine.

Chrysler 300 sedans sold in the United States are pitched as luxury models undercutting the likes of BMW or Mercedes. But Australians treated it as a hot rod.

As the Chrysler 300 was the only car offered by the brand in Australia, FCA Australia and parent company Stellantis has opted to withdraw the marque from our shores.

Jeep dealerships will still supply parts and servicing for the sedan, which serves as a police highway patrol vehicle in NSW.

Kevin Flynn, FCA Australia managing director, said “Chrysler has held a special place in the heart of many Australians and we are proud of its history here”.

Chrysler’s locally-built Valiant Charger was a worthy rival to Holden and Ford muscle cars in the 1970s. Many folks will remember the brand’s “Hey Charger” ad campaign, and the vehicle’s starring role in films such as Wog Boy.

A statement released by FCA Australia said Chrysler fell victim to “the global push towards electrification and focus on SUVs”.

FCA will focus on Jeep in 2022, introducing a plug-in hybrid version of the Grand Cherokee as well as a larger, three-row Grand Cherokee L aimed at big families.

“We have a hugely positive year ahead of us,” Flynn said.

“These models represent real advancements in terms of technology, luxury, efficiency and capability.”
