The trending recipe of #ChristmasCracks was made viral by food creator Mary Sommer and within a short span it garnered over 60 million views. The internet is obsessed with this super easy saltine cracker toffee recipe that has got instant attention and love from the world over. The Christmas dessert is easy to make with salted crackers at the base and topped with caramel and melted chocolate chips. You can set it up in the fridge and the outcome is a crackling mouth-watering dish!
Talking about this latest Christmassy trend – Kazem Samandari, founder of a French patisserie, says, “This year is all about the Christmas cracks that are easy to prepare in the intimacy of one’s home with ample room for variations to make it a personal recipe. Traditional Christmas recipes that are all time favourites include the plum fruit cake, panettone, alpine nut cake, strawberry vanilla buche, ginger breads and so on.”
Christmas Crack Recipe
1 pack saltine crackers
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup packed brown sugar
12 ounce packaged chocolate chips
(dark, semi-sweet or milk chocolate)
Additional / optional
toppings: nuts,
M&Ms, sprinkles
How to make
Preheat oven to 200 degree celsius
Line a rimmed cookie sheet with parchment paper and assemble saltine crackers in a single layer
In a saucepan over medium flame, melt the butter and brown sugar together. Bring it to a boil then stir until combined and sugar is melted. Continue to boil for 5 minutes.
Remove caramel from heat and pour over the crackers. Spread it out.
Bake for 5 to 6 minutes or till caramel turns bubbly
Remove from oven and sprinkle with chocolate chips
Put back in the oven for 2 minutes till the chocolate chips begin to glisten and melt
Remove from the oven and spread the melted chocolate with an icing spatula. Add your choice of toppings.
Now transfer the pan to the fridge / freezer till it turns firm. This will take 20-30 minutes.
Cut big pieces and serve.
