Christina Applegate’s Manicure Makes a Powerful Statement About Her MS Diagnosis
Some beauty notes are designed to send a message. For Christina Applegate, a manicure served as a vehicle to communicate her feelings about her multiple sclerosis diagnosis as she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
“f u M S” read the nails, the white letters printed atop the seasonally-hued polish job. Nail artist Vanessa Sanchez relied on Green Flash LED Nail Polish in Hollyhock for the deep burgundy foundation, allowing the sentiment to immediately fall into focus. As the cameras flashed, the Dead to Me presented her hands at every opportunity to shed light on her battle.
Applegate was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (or MS) in 2021, joining the nearly 1 million people in the U.S. living with the condition. MS causes the immune system to disrupt the central nervous system, affecting the brain’s ability to send signals throughout the body. The disease comes with a list of symptoms—including numbness, issues with memory, and paralysis—that vary significantly from person to person. It is three times more common in women than in men.
“Today I got to celebrate your strength, your journey, your contributions to the arts and to building a community that loves you,” captioned hairstylist Adir Abergel in a celebratory post. “Even after being diagnosed with MS, you show up for yourself and the people that love you.” For the actor, it seems that attitude is half the battle.
