Christian Eriksen nets for Denmark against Serbia in Copenhagen – where he suffered cardiac arrest

Christian Eriksen has continued his remarkable return to football by netting his second goal in three days for Denmark – scoring against Serbia in Copenhagen, the scene of his horrifying cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 last summer.

Eriksen’s collapse in the opening game of the tournament stunned the world last year, but he recovered before having an ICD heart starting device fitted – with doctors confident he was fit to return to the professional game.

The playmaker was released by Inter Milan due to strict laws forbidding players who have such devices, and Brentford decided to give him a contract until the end of the season. His vibrant start to life in west London was rewarded with an emotional call-up to the Denmark squad once again and he duly scored in his first game back against Holland on Saturday.

It came on his return to Copenhagen, the scene of his sickening cardiac arrest at Euro 2020

But while he was only given a substitute appearance in that game, his boss Kasper Hjulmand rewarded his recent form with a full start against Serbia on Tuesday.

And he did not disappoint as he added a third goal for Denmark in their friendly win, collecting a simple pass from the edge of the penalty area, taking two touches before lasering a shot into the bottom left hand corner. 

It was a successful and emotional day all round for Eriksen, who was given the captain’s armband by regular skipper Kasper Schmeichel to mark his return to Copenhagen.

Eriksen helped round off a confident 3-0 win over the Serbians as they look ahead to another major tournament – the 2022 World Cup in Qatar later this year. 

He fired in a trademark effort from range that fizzed into the bottom left hand corner of the net

Eriksen is swamped by his team-mates after adding the third of the night against Serbia 

After it was confirmed Eriksen would wear the captain’s armband against Serbia, the former Tottenham star could not hide his pride.

‘It will definitely be very special because I have not been to Parken since it happened,’ Eriksen said on Monday.

‘Now I am incredibly looking forward to being back on the field here in the Park and being a football player.

‘Because that’s what it’s about for me. But I also look forward to the fact that after the match we can put it behind us.’

His goal came just days after scoring on his full return for Denmark in their clash vs Holland

Speaking after his strike against Holland in their 4-2 loss on the weekend – a superb finish into the top corner – Eriksen said he was pleased with the goal and grateful for the support of the both sets of fans.  

‘I was happy the ball came to me and of course, it was a lovely finish,’ Eriksen told Sky Sports. ‘To start the comeback in international football like this was the perfect way.

‘I felt very welcome (by the Holland fans). I’ve been here before (for Ajax) for many years so of course, they know me, but it was a very heart-warming reception for sure.

‘I’m looking forward to playing at the Qatar World Cup but there are a lot of games in between and I’m focused on them.’
