- Becoming England’s record scorer is an immense achievement by Harry Kane
- Kane’s penalty against Italy required mental strength after his World Cup miss
- The England captain will desperate for team medals to add to individual success
When you think of the great names on the list of England’s all-time top scorers, for Harry Kane to sit clear of them all is an immense achievement.
It has seemed inevitable for some time that he would break Wayne Rooney’s record. But you could see from the emotion on his face after he tucked away his penalty on Thursday night in Naples just what a huge moment this was for him.
Like it or not, his penalty miss against France in the World Cup would have been playing on his mind. So to step up and score from the spot against Italy took great mental strength — but Harry has never been one to shirk a challenge. He has that resilience and resolve.
He backs himself and he always has done. When he burst on to the scene, everyone said he would be a one-season wonder. But what he has gone on to achieve is testament to his work ethic and attitude. And the way his team-mates celebrated with him once again showed that he is one of the game’s good guys.
It is incredible to be the top scorer for your country.
But Harry is in a position now where he’ll want team medals to go with that — to win something with England or Tottenham, or both, to make it an absolutely perfect set.
