Tamil Nadu Sports Minister, Udhayanidhi Stalin, announced that top-flight hockey would be returning to Chennai, which was once the capital of the sport in South India. He expressed his pleasure at the prospect of hosting the Hero Asian Champions Trophy 2023, stating that the event would further revive the sport in the region.

The last international hockey event held in Chennai was the Asia Cup in 2007, at the Mayor Radhakrishnan stadium. The home team won the title by beating Korea 7-2 in the final.
Apart from India, the tournament will also feature defending champions South Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Japan, and China.
