Graham Potter’s side only had three shots on target and failed to fully convince in their performance against the strugglers.

He simply said: ‘It’s a result,’ before smiling.

The win is the first for eight games and the second in 12 in all competitions under Potter, who has lost as many games as he has won (10) during his 27 games at the club since replacing Thomas Tuchel.

After the game, the relieved former Brighton boss said it was ‘nice to go home with a win’ after the club has suffered a ‘challenging period’ amid calls for his sacking from fans.

He said: ‘It [the feeling after winning] is better than the opposite, that’s for sure.

‘I’m delighted for the players and I’m delighted for the supporters because they are the most important people at the football club. People care. Players want to win and supporters want us to do well.

‘If you don’t get results it is my responsibility. I accept that. It’s been a tough period for us all and it’s nice to go home with a win. It’s good for confidence and morale.

‘Now we have to prepare for a really exciting game on Tuesday night which I’m sure will be a fantastic occasion and we will try and win. It is [massive].

‘We’ve had to suffer. The boys have been suffering because they care, they do. Our supporters have been suffering. It’s been a challenging period.’

Next up, Chelsea host German side Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last 16 second leg, trailing 1-0 from the first leg, on Tuesday before travelling to Leicester on Saturday.
